Bignor Dewpond Restoration - in memory of Peter Iden
When Peter died, it seemed fitting to organise a permanent memorial to him. We were extremely lucky to be able to fund the restoration of a dewpond, located in a spectacular position on the top of the South Downs on National Trust land near Bignor. This was just the sort of project that we were looking for: it was an area that Peter loved, and which had featured in his paintings, it would enhance the landscape as well as benefiting wildlife, and the bench that we hope will soon be in place will give walkers somewhere to rest for a while.
Many friends and relations contributed to the appeal which raised over £5000. The main work was carried out in Summer 2014. We are continuing to improve the area, at present concentrating on the meadow area round the pond, which we hope to restore to chalk grassland. To this end, we have held 2 work parties. The first of these, in August 2014 was to rake and remove matted grass and to sow yellow rattle seed. The second, in February 2015, cleared some scrub near the pond. We will carry on with this work later in 2015.
